The Harriston Historical Society is hosting a presentation on British Home Children on Oct. 20.
John Jefkins will describe the plight of his father who was pulled from his family home in England, and sent on a ship with hundreds of other youngsters to find a better life in Canada. Each had a trunk of necessities but nothing personal.
Jefkin’s father was among the lucky ones taken in by a good family. Others were not so fortunate and were used as cheap farm labor, tortured and continually abused, society officials note.
Lefkins will also discuss how he finally discovered his “unknown family” and visited them in England
The free presentation begins at 7pm in the Harriston Library Conference. For further information call 519-338-3232.
